about

Miami psych-dream-pop quartet Jaialai released their latest single and video, “Vesuvius,” today - which premiered at Under The Radar. “Vesuvius'' is featured on Jaialai’s upcoming EP, As Sweet As I Was, due March 12 via Super Music Group.

Discussing the track, songwriter and guitarist Oscar Sardiñas said, “‘Vesuvius’ was written on the day the George Floyd protests started. I was watching the news and was moved but also feeling a bit of sensory overload. Massive nationwide protests amidst a pandemic during a Trump presidency. The alt-right and anarchists taking part in the protests and stoking the flames even further. That period in time exposed deep wounds this country has yet to heal.”

“Vesuvius” is the second single from the anticipated EP, following the release of the critically acclaimed, jazz-fused, “Victor’s Belt.” Both songs showcase the eclectic sounds from the group that are heavily influenced by their respective Latin backgrounds and Miami music scene.

The animated video was inspired by Alan Moore’s graphic novels such as Watchmen and V for Vendetta. “At the moment I heard the song along with the lyrics, I was transported to this place that we all know exists but we usually ignore,” explained director Manuel Fermont. “A place of inequality, the black market, megacorporations and governments corroded to the guts, senseless wars and exploitation, where there are means of communication tabloids and that mold the collective hysteria at will.”

‘It’s a place that catches you in a way beyond the physical, it transports you to a distant place where these problems seem to go up in smoke by the end of the song and help the listener reach inner peace amidst the chaos.”

lyrics

Find they’re one in the same
Tell me who’s left to blame
Carve my name on a rock
As sweet as I was
Me I’m shoveling dirt
I got used to the curse
Everyone’s wading their way
Through the flood

Bankrolling the commotion

Brick with a bow on it
Palace guard throwing it
Tell me who pays for it
Do they love the cause?
Who left the palettes out?
Can’t see their faces now
Smiles from a balaclava
Fistful of dollars offered

Bankrolling the commotion

Always thinking
About the future
About our need
To start a new life
Break, break breaking up the circle
By the ocean
Wake, wake, waking up Vesuvius
In case I leave
Break, break breaking up the circle
Here’s some money
Wake, wake, waking up Vesuvius
Here’s the key
